Friday Feast #57: Browsers, Standards, and Opera’s Latest
I’ve written previously that now is a fantastic window of opportunity for other browsers to promote their features, especially to companies who could migrate their entire staffs and intranets to a browser other than Internet Explorer. Today’s Friday Feast is about Opera doing exactly that, along with other browsers and popular features. (1331 words, 20 links)

Zeldman: Eminem Lookalike?
This has got to be the funniest thing I’ve read for days: Zeldminem tells Grettir Asmundarson’s lighthearted story of buying Jeffrey Zeldman’s new book, Designing with Web Standards. What tops it off is the side-by-side book covers he’s created inspired by his bookstore conversation with the cashier. (49 words, 3 links, 1 image)

CSS Floats, by Eric Meyer
Floats aren’t just for ice cream and rootbeer. (Sorry, it’s hot here... ) Eric Meyer has a new CSS article, Containing Floats. Eric has an amazing ability to take a baffling concept that so many people have trouble understanding and explaining it in a such a simple way that you wonder how you could have ever been confused in the first place. That’s the case with his latest article on floats, too. (170 words, 7 links, 1 image)

Power Outages Here, Flood Warnings
(posted August 21, 2003 - 3:10pm) We’ve got quite a storm passing through California’s central valley right now with an alert just issued for possible localized flooding—Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto areas. Over 20,000 people have no power as a result, lightning has struck in places causing fires, and there have been quite a few car accidents. With the heavy downpours our streams and creeks that meander throughout the areas are filling up, resulting in a flood warning just being issued. In other words, it’s a little crazy in my neck of the woods at the moment... (276 words, 3 links, 1 image)

Weblogs, digital cameras, and moblogging were posting the latest details about what was going on with the blackout. Below is a listing of some of them along with related information. MT and Perl Upgrades
My Movable Type installation has been down since sometime Friday. After researching, posting an inquiry to MT Forums’s thread Username and Blog Disappeared!, and writing to the MT folks, Ben quickly responded to let me know that it’s probably due to a server-related Perl upgrade that my ISP did Friday. Mid-week Feast of Links
The harsh reality is that there are so many good sites, articles, resources, posts out there. I can understand why sideblogs with just links in them are spreading in popularity. At any rate, here are some terrific resources that I?ve been wanting to share on these topics: CSS Inspiration, Helping Your Website, More on URLs, Movable Type, RSS, Weblogs, Misc. Movable Type Entry URL Choices
Some people using Movable Type use the entry titles for the individual entry URLs, which is also what I do for Brainstorms and Raves. This can be a fine solution toward the friendly URL idea; however, a potential disadvantage is that the URL can get unreasonably long, as I’ve especially seen with more than a few of my pre-Movable Type posts. I’ve been scouting around for a way to either provide the entry URL myself or at least shorten the entry-title-based URL. It’s possible to make the individual entry URL the first __ number of characters from the entry title.... (701 words, 7 links)

Edition 2: Separating Content from Presentation
The first rate book on CSS, Cascading Style Sheets: Separating Content from Presentation, previously published by Glasshaus, will now be published by Apress and is going to have a second edition to be published later this year. Congratulations to authors Owen Briggs, Steve Champeon, Eric Costello, Matthew Patterson, and the addition of Dave Shea doing a case study on a CSS redo of his mezzoblue website. I’m especially thrilled to see this terrific book continue with a second edition. I was honored to have been a tech reviewer for the first edition, which gave me an insider’s view to the... IE6 Bugs, Blockquotes, Padding, Links, and CSS
Julian Carroll seems to have found another IE6 quirk which he shows and explains at IE6 weirdness with blockquote and a:hover. So if you’ve been pulling your hair out wondering why something strange happens with your blockquotes in IE6 when you add borders and padding you’re not alone. This is an odd one indeed. For more odd IE6 behavior, check out Tom Gilder’s page on Internet Explorer 6 CSS Bugs. (132 words, 4 links)

Friday Feast #55: Friendly, Lasting URLs
Setting up a new website or a redesign for a client or yourself most likely includes considering the URLs for all the pages. If URLs are auto-generated by software, changing software might result in all those URLs changing, thus breaking incoming links and diminishing or ruining search engine placements unless redirects are set up. Some URL configurations can even prevent search engines from spidering at all, too. Today’s Friday Feast explores resources about friendly and long-lasting URLs. I’ll follow up soon about the URL choices I made and why for my transition from Blogger to Movable Type. (760 words, 19 links)
