Opera 5.12 Update for Windows Now Available!

If you haven’t checked out Opera yet, this latest update for Windows has some great enhancements. Their latest press release is below with further details for your enjoyment.

Free or Registered Versions

Opera has a FREE version available with small ads (much like the Eudora email program), and a registered version without the ads.

Top-Notch Performance

On the Web so much with my work as a designer/developer, Opera has never frozen up, even during the past 6 to 8 weeks that I’ve used it as my primary browser. Perhaps once a week there’s an error, and Opera warns me before it closes up (and I can immediately open it again without restarting my computer). It has not yet crashed my computer since I began using it at least 2 to 3 years ago. I can’t say that about any versions of Internet Explorer or Netscape (or most other software, either!).

Handy For Web Designers, Developers

As a Web site designer and developer, it’s a handy program for so easily turning off images, JavaScript, frames and other options to see how pages function without them.

Additionally, browser standards are very important to Opera, and they work diligently toward standards compliance. As a strong advocate of WaSP, this is definitely a strong point to me, too.

Here’s their June 27 press release:

New York, New York—June 27, 2001

At PC Expo, Opera Software today launched its latest iteration of its desktop browser; Opera 5.12 for Windows. This latest version introduces new features and incorporates several bug fixes to the popular Opera 5 for Windows.

Opera 5.12 for Windows is an update to Opera 5 for Windows which has already been downloaded by 3,5 million new users all over the world, and 20,000 new users are signing up every day. The browser which was "set free" in December of last year, and was downloaded by 2 million users during the first month, is available in a free ad-sponsored version or users may register a copy of Opera for 39 USD. Users who have purchased a version of Opera 4 or Opera 5.x are entitled to a free upgrade.

"Not only is the Opera 5.12 for Windows as fast, small in size and secure as Opera 5," says Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software, "but we have included many important new features such as the ability to search Opera’s knowledge base directly and important bug fixes that will make our users' Internet experience even better."

Opera 5.12 for Windows released today updates and adds the following features and functions:

  • Enhanced pop-up window handling
  • Java-enabled version includes the newest Runtime Environment, version 1.3.1
  • Bug fixes, mainly in the e-mail client
  • Option to search Opera’s knowledge base directly, import Netscape e-mail and the possibility of sending a URL to Opera’s e-mail client
