Not long after the interview, the official IE Blog also announced the upcoming Internet Explorer 8. Check out the complete post that covers that interview, the IE Blog's announcement, an earlier interview with Chris Wilson (IE's platform architect), other information about the upcoming IE8, and IE's current CSS support.
IE7, Firefox Browser Percentages in Stats Logs

I've been watching my browser stats the past few months to see how quickly Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) use grows and how Firefox and other browsers are doing, too. For anyone curious about seeing trends for various sites, I created the charts below to share three of my sites' browser trends from September, 2005 through January, 2007. I also tossed in a short summary of the browser trends - you might be surprised! (574 words, 9 links)

Usability and Design News: Screen Resolution, Page Layout, Hot Spots

Jakob Nielsen and Andy King both have new articles at their sites that cover window resolution, user-friendly website design, and related issues. This important topic is also regularly discussed and debated in Web design and development discussion lists. Below I've highlighted their articles, but be sure to check them out in full, too (links below). (658 words, 9 links, 2 images)

Website Testing: Conquering Cross-browser, Cross-platform Woes

As I was doing final cross-browser testing for a redesign of SKDesigns, my website design business, the design implementation was working quite well in nearly every mainstream browser for Windows, Mac, Linux, and even the Lynx text-only browser. Unfortunately, though, I found problems with three old or little used browsers, such as Internet Explorer 5.2 for Mac that destroyed the CSS-positioned layout. I toiled over how to best handle these browser bugs, especially since my upcoming Web design book -- currently in production at my publisher -- stresses the importance of usability, readability, and degrading gracefully for older browsers. Today's post covers part of my decision-making journey and choices of approaches for dealing with these CSS bug-riddled old and little-used browsers.
WaSP, Microsoft, and Web Standards

The WaSP (Web Standards Project) website today reported on two recent face-to-face meetings between WaSP and Microsoft as part of a new collaboration to promote Web standards and help developers build standards-conformant Web applications. The initial indications are incredibly positive, and I'm more than a little thrilled to see this giant leap forward. Read the complete post for more on this. (302 words, 6 links)

Google Toolbar's AutoLink & The Need For Opt-Out is Danny Sullivan's thoughtful follow-up article today on the Google toolbar AutoLink feature currently in Beta testing for Windows Internet Explorer users. He presents arguments in favor of AutoLink and opposed to it, includes links to various opinions, and he expresses his own views and concerns. This one article explains it all quite well. More: See also my post yesterday, Google's New Toolbar Embeds Links Within Your Website Without Your Permission. (106 words, 4 links)

Google's New Toolbar Embeds Links Within Your Website Without Your Permission

Neil Turner, of the popular Neil's World weblog, reported last week about Google's new toolbar feature that embeds links within your website content without your permission: Google's new Autolink toolbar feature. Although Neil doesn't think it's a big deal, outrage abounds elsewhere, such as at Slashdot's Is Google AutoLink Patent-Pending By Microsoft? where this new feature is compared to Microsoft's Smart Tags ploy in 2001.
