Destroy Those Old Hard Drives

I have a couple of old computers to donate or take to a recycling facility, but first I want to remove the hard drives and destroy them. Researching the current best approaches to destroy old hard drives led me to some downright scary stories of identity theft or potential identity theft from consumers just following requirements for hard drive warranties or computer store repair policies. I thought I'd share a sampling of stories and recommendations on how to safely physically destroy those old hard drives. In addition, I'm including some humorous, light-hearted, and creative approaches to destroying those old hard drives. (2029 words, 28 links)

Zeldman: Eminem Lookalike?

This has got to be the funniest thing I've read for days: Zeldminem tells Grettir Asmundarson's lighthearted story of buying Jeffrey Zeldman's new book, Designing with Web Standards. What tops it off is the side-by-side book covers he's created inspired by his bookstore conversation with the cashier. (49 words, 3 links, 1 image)

Letterman's Top 10 and President Bush

I don't post much on weekends these days, and I don't discuss politics much at my weblog, either; however, I'll make exceptions this time. Karlin Lillington's weblog posted May 6th's Top 10 by David Letterman, Top Ten President Bush Excuses For Not Finding Weapons of Mass Destruction. For more of Letterman's Top 10 lists, The Late Show with David Letterman has online The Top 10 Archives, which includes quite a few Top Ten lists about President Bush (for the current Bush and his father), including Top Ten President Bush Excuses For Not Finding Weapons of Mass Destruction. Now I'm going... (131 words, 5 links)

Friday Feast #36: Semantic Web, Opera's Bork, CSS, XHTML, Do Not Call Lists

This week's mix of topics reminds me why I started calling these Friday Feasts -- another round of topics covering the map. And stay tuned here Sunday for the beginning of a new weekend topic, Saturday/Sunday Sounds. Ideagraph After reading about mind mapping and the Semantic web in a recent Friday Feast, the creator of Ideagraph let me know of this amazing tool. Ideagraph is a personal knowledge manager that goes beyond what other mindmapping tools will do and incorporates more Semantic web possibilities with mapping ideas, creating web pages, documents, images, and more. It's even possible to use... (602 words, 29 links)

Today's Friday Feast has links to some helpful new tips for print and CSS, two new articles by search engine expert Danny Sullivan, and great innovations in wireless development.
Humor Break: How To Eat a Pretzel

I couldn't resist posting a link to this silly article by the Brains Trust, Pretzel Eating in Safety and Comfort, A Guide for the Dangerously Stupid. (It's also rather ironic that Bush's life is being so closely guarded against would-be assassins and terrorists and that he could have choked to death on a pretzel.)
On a Lighter Note - Patchsoft by Microsoft

Satirewire has released its latest satire, this one about the creation of Patchsoft. Here are just a few highlights: Redmond, Wash. (SatireWire.com) -- In a surprise settlement today with nine U.S. states, Microsoft agreed to be split into two independent companies -- one that will continue to make Microsoft operating systems, browsers, and server software, and another, potentially larger company that will make patches for Microsoft operating systems, browsers, and server software. . . “Patchsoft developers will not have any foreknowledge of bugs or security holes before software is released. They'll just have to be surprised,” he said. “So it will... (115 words, 2 links)

Ready For Some Silly Humor? A Tombats Flash cartoon

I've always enjoyed the lighthearted silly humor of Tom Murphy's dingbat fonts. Visiting Tom's weblog over the weekend I was delighted to find a link to a Flash cartoon using the Tombats 6 dingbat font. The cartoon's light humor is just like the entire series of Tom's Tombats. Tom Murphy also just released Tombats 7 a few weeks ago, too. (110 words, 6 links, 1 image)
