Displaced, Injured Animals from Hurricane Katrina

I've seen so many scenes of stranded animals from Hurricane Katrina, including dogs holding on to tree limbs for dear life or stranded on rooftops or balconies all alone. There are countless displaced farm animals, wildlife, and beloved pets as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Please help or donate. Tonight's post provides links to several agencies for more information. (357 words, 7 links, 1 image)

Helping Those Impacted by Hurricane Katrina

Like many of us, I've been glued to the TV watching the latest news on Hurricane Katrina. The devastation is heart-wrenching. There's news all over the Web, of course, about what's going on, including weblogs popping up. Today's post includes a selection of helpful links of how to help and how to follow the coverage of this horrendous disaster. (314 words, 12 links)

Aftermath of London Attacks

First, Brainstorms and Raves is not and doesn't plan to be a weblog covering current events or politics. I'm compelled to write about Thursday's terror attacks in London, but my writings here cover how people are using the Internet, especially weblogs, to stay in touch, share stories, and write their thoughts about what happened. Read the complete post for links to quite a few interesting weblogs, photoblogs, and BBC pages with personal accounts.

Helping the Tsunami Victims

Anders Jacobsen has volunteered to pay $1 to the British Red Cross for anyone creating a weblog post on the front page or creating permanent links in the weblog's blogroll, linking to the organizations listed below, and then linking to his blog and his post, Webloggers: Give to tsunami victims and I'll give too! Here's a list of some of the organizations accepting donations and other contributions: (373 words, 21 links)

Weekend Silliness: The Ridiculous Adventures of Buying a Car

There must be plenty of car salesmen out there who don't play ridiculous games, but our recent experience buying a car unfortunately reinforced the stories we'd read and heard. Nonetheless, buying a car was quite an adventure, and we ended up getting a good deal in the end. How we got to that point, though, is something my family and I won't forget.
Power Outages Here, Flood Warnings

(posted August 21, 2003 - 3:10pm) We've got quite a storm passing through California's central valley right now with an alert just issued for possible localized flooding -- Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto areas. Over 20,000 people have no power as a result, lightning has struck in places causing fires, and there have been quite a few car accidents. With the heavy downpours our streams and creeks that meander throughout the areas are filling up, resulting in a flood warning just being issued. In other words, it's a little crazy in my neck of the woods at the moment... (276 words, 3 links, 1 image)

New Interview About Web Standards, Life, Technology, and More

I've been interviewed again, this time by zlog's very kind Ronan: Interview #5 - Shirley Kaiser. It was a lot of fun, and we covered quite a range of topics, mostly around web standards, but we also discussed my nutso passion for technology, my kids, and assorted other things.

I've always been passionate about standards, and this new interview explains at least some of the reasons why I feel so strongly about their importance, in addition to a bit of history behind how we got to where we are today. (117 words, 7 links)

Movable Type Plugins, Tutorials, Tips, Templates, and Resources

You'll find a quickly growing list of links for Movable Type in my Build One section. There won't be a Friday Feast this week due to the 4th of July holiday here in the U.S. combined with me recuperating from a nasty fall (over my dog and down a step... it wasn't pretty)....
Four Years Ago Today...

I was holding her hand as she lay in a coma at the hospital. She'd had a massive stroke and heart attack earlier that morning from which she would not survive. Amazingly, despite her grave condition my mom held on to life long enough for out-of-state family to fly in to be there with her as she took her final breaths in this world. Only a few days before that my mom and I had talked and laughed together. I knew that her last days were near, but I kept hoping she'd be here a little longer. In retrospect...
