Aftermath of London Attacks

First, Brainstorms and Raves is not and doesn't plan to be a weblog covering current events or politics. I'm compelled to write about Thursday's terror attacks in London, but my writings here cover how people are using the Internet, especially weblogs, to stay in touch, share stories, and write their thoughts about what happened. Read the complete post for links to quite a few interesting weblogs, photoblogs, and BBC pages with personal accounts.

Weblogs, Politics, and Technorati

You may have noticed that weblogs are catching on in major political arenas here in the U.S., especially with the upcoming presidential election. CNN's Convention Blog lists quite a few weblogs from all political viewpoints, thanks to Technorati. Technorati's David Sifry is working with CNN on blog coverage of the Democratic National Convention, as he wrote in his July 21 post, Technorati and CNN. That is indeed exciting news for David Sifry and Technorati. (216 words, 4 links)

Information Design, Interconnectedness, and Assault Weapons?!

Earlier today I was looking for information design tips, so naturally I went to visit Beth Mazur's IDBlog. While there I got sidetracked with one of her recent posts, Blogs, Power Laws, and Assault Weapons, about Tom Mauser's Petition to Renew the Assault Weapons Ban. The animated map of Tom Mauser's Petition showing relationships of people who've signed the petition is fascinating to see. (175 words, 9 links, 1 image)

Power Outage Stories, Photos

Weblogs, digital cameras, and moblogging were posting the latest details about what was going on with the blackout. Below is a listing of some of them along with related information. I found myself far more interested in the firsthand accounts and photos than whatever the TV had to say about things. Firsthand Photos, Stories: (303 words, 14 links)

Letterman's Top 10 and President Bush

I don't post much on weekends these days, and I don't discuss politics much at my weblog, either; however, I'll make exceptions this time. Karlin Lillington's weblog posted May 6th's Top 10 by David Letterman, Top Ten President Bush Excuses For Not Finding Weapons of Mass Destruction. For more of Letterman's Top 10 lists, The Late Show with David Letterman has online The Top 10 Archives, which includes quite a few Top Ten lists about President Bush (for the current Bush and his father), including Top Ten President Bush Excuses For Not Finding Weapons of Mass Destruction. Now I'm going... (131 words, 5 links)

In Memory of 9/11 Six Months Ago Today

No entry today. Instead I invite you to read some of the personal stories from people who were in the World Trade Center buildings, the Pentagon, the downed plane in Pennsylvania and those who tried valiantly to stop the terrorists, review photos, and more in the Attack on America section here at Brainstorms and Raves....
Tender Thoughts and Tribute For Sept. 11

I can't close out the year without saying something again about what happened September 11th. Richard Guyon of Ricon Web Design just submitted an amazingly heartfelt and touching Flash movie, World Trade Center Tribute, a tribute to the events from that day, for the Attack on America section at Brainstorms and Raves. Keep the tissue handy--tears streamed down my cheeks throughout, and I sobbed thinking of those who lost their lives, their loved ones, everyone who experienced the attacks, and remembering the helplessness so many of us felt watching the events unfold on the TV, from rooftops, from everywhere. I'm... (205 words, 3 links)

The Mind Game of Fear

We've been officially warned by the F.B.I. and our President that we could be attacked during the next few days and to be watchful. Yet we are also told that we need to carry on and live our lives. Part of the terrorists' plan is to scare us to the point of immobilizing us, destroying our way of life, our economy, and more. While it's only natural to get frightened when planes fly into our buildings and kill thousands of people and now seeing Anthrax pop up, our fear can't stand in the way of us carrying on. How?... (446 words, 2 links)
