Destroy Those Old Hard Drives

I have a couple of old computers to donate or take to a recycling facility, but first I want to remove the hard drives and destroy them. Researching the current best approaches to destroy old hard drives led me to some downright scary stories of identity theft or potential identity theft from consumers just following requirements for hard drive warranties or computer store repair policies. I thought I'd share a sampling of stories and recommendations on how to safely physically destroy those old hard drives. In addition, I'm including some humorous, light-hearted, and creative approaches to destroying those old hard drives. (2029 words, 28 links)

Digitizing Family and Historic Photos

Did you know that there's Internet access to nearly half of the Library of Congress's 13.6-million-plus images from its Prints and Photographs collection? Just imagine -- Ansel Adams' World War II photographs, Mathew Brady's Civil War photos! What a mind-boggling digitizing project and also an incredible opportunity for the world to see them. I learned those tidbits from First Monday's new article, Digitizing Old Photographs for the Web by Ruth Garner, Mark Gillingham, and Yong Zhao, one of the many fascinating articles in First Monday's January issue. They're finding how digitizing old photographs is changing our interaction with photos... (295 words, 5 links)

Listen While there you can listen (MP3) to current hits or travel back in time to music by The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Woodie Guthrie, classical music, Jazz, folk music, every flavor of rock and heavy metal, blues, R&B, hip-hop, reggae, movie and theater soundtracks, and so much more.
Washington State Library's Existence Threatened

This is one of the most nutso things I've heard for awhile. New Breed Librarian reports: "Washington State Library is fighting for its existence. If shut down, Washington will lose a unique repository serving historians, public officials, genealogists, and others. Further, WA would be the only state without a state library." While I understand that budget cuts can mean some tough decisions, this kind of potential cut is absolutely ludicrous. Let's hope the publicity stops this one in its tracks before it gets even close to passing.... (90 words, 3 links)

Libraries All Around the World

I pay attention to people's email sigs and love to explore. Today another one caught my eye and led me to an amazing collection of over 8,400 libraries from 130 countries all over the world at Michael Sauers' The WWW Library Directory. In addition, he has links to other lists, too, including a link to IFLANET's Web Accessible National and Major Libraries listing. Perhaps you'd enjoy a virtual tour of the (U.S.) National Archives Exhibit Hall where you can enjoy Picturing The Century to "timetravel throughout the 20th century in this exhibit of photographs from every decade in the... (198 words, 10 links)
