New Interview About Web Standards, Life, Technology, and More

I've been interviewed again, this time by zlog's very kind Ronan: Interview #5 - Shirley Kaiser. It was a lot of fun, and we covered quite a range of topics, mostly around web standards, but we also discussed my nutso passion for technology, my kids, and assorted other things.

I've always been passionate about standards, and this new interview explains at least some of the reasons why I feel so strongly about their importance, in addition to a bit of history behind how we got to where we are today. (117 words, 7 links)

Mobile Version of Brainstorms and Raves

Brainstorms and Raves - Mobile version is now available. What's the difference? It's the simple and plain version, that's all. The handy part is that it's auto-generated by Movable Type, thanks to Brad Choate's MTMacro, Mark Pilgrim's mobile macros, instructions, and mobile templates. I'd love some feedback from anyone who subscribes to it via PDA, mobile phone, whatever. I'm testing it on my Nokia 6200 and my trusty Handspring Prism with AvantGo....
Friday Feast #48: Bookmarklets, CSS Charts, RSS, Stock Photos, Wi-fi and Wireless

Today's Feast, as usual, covers a variety of topics, including more bookmarklet resources, a helpful CSS chart, using definition lists, a new stock photo and art site, several links about RSS use, wi-fi and wireless news, and other tidbits. More on Bookmarklets When I mentioned some bookmarklet resources in last week's Feast I figured most folks reading my weblog already knew about Tantek Çelik's favelets and bookmarklets.com; however, even if you already know about them, both sites have updates and are more than worth a revisit. CSS If you haven't yet visited MacEdition's Abridged Guide to CSS2 Support, check... (705 words, 23 links)

Moblogging, GPS, and Mobile Phones

Chatting on IRC at Joi Ito's IRC channel Monday night was far too much fun, and I met some terrific people there. Check it out sometime if you can. I was also fascinated with what Joi mentioned to me about moblogging and GPS at the Tokyo Bits site. Take note of the “location” links under a couple of the photos and you'll find the longitude and latitude coordinates and a map of where the photos were taken. GPS Details for Tokyo Tidbits explains the code behind how Tokyo Tidbits does it magic with the photos, GPS, and accompanying maps.... (700 words, 20 links)

Camera Phones, Moblogging Continued, and Technology to Change the World

Here are more interesting links related to camera phones, moblogging, and related technology following my post Tuesday, Mobile Phones, Moblogs, and Technology: Adam Greenfield is credited with coining the term “moblogging” last November, just over 6 months ago, noting HipTop Nation as an example: “the future-becoming-present in real time: this is what happens when you fuse digital cameras and text-entry functionality with a way to publish it to the Web, for better and worse”. Satoshi Nakajima, CEO for UIEvolution Inc. has provided the rest of us with a terrific overview history with corresponding links about camera phones in his... (274 words, 12 links)

Mobile Phones, Moblogs, and Technology

Maybe you've seen some of the latest weblogs, coined moblogs, popping up with images and posts from the authors' wireless camera phones. I've also seen the ads on TV about taking pictures with your mobile phone and instantly sending them to friends. Amazing. So is this just the latest toy or will wireless camera phones sending photos become an everyday way of life just like cell phones themselves? Will we see more and more moblogs? There are some interesting articles, a growing community of mobloggers, and even an upcoming moblog conference that ask those questions and go into wireless camera...
Friday Feast #37: Wireless Networking and Wardrivers

Last year I networked my office computers with wired/wireless capability. I used a wired/wireless approach in part to live my dream of using my laptop to work outside on my patio instead of being locked to my office desk inside. Until the other day's local news report on wardrivers I hadn't paid much attention to wireless networking vulnerabilities. After all, my network is secure with a router, firewall, and password-only access, right? Well, after that report I took a second look at all my settings and read more about wireless networking security just to be sure. While I was... (740 words, 22 links)

Internet Access Atop Mount Everest?!

Gordon Cook of the Cook Report and Tsering Gyaltsen, the grandson of the only Sherpa to accompany Sir Edmund Hillary on his historic ascent of Mount Everest, happened to meet and strike up a conversation last November. The result: wireless e-mail access at the base camp of Mount Everest is being added just in time for the 50th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary's first ascent of this incredibly treacherous mountain. This will also be the highest Internet cafe in the world. The severe temperatures, glaciers, and difficulties of the terrain make this no small feat. Wireless radios with special...
